  • He compared the dish to the one his mother makes.

Within the extensive evidence that was collected by the US and Mexican authorities against Joaquín Guzmán Loera, there was something that caught everyone’s attention. Today we tell you about Emma Coronel’s special dish that El Chapo fell in love with.

This detail may not have been as relevant or momentous as other information that served to incriminate the Sinaloa cartel, but in a series of text messages that Guzmán sent to his wife Emma Coronel, El Chapo himself confessed that he fell in love with her after trying one of her special dishes.

A little-known story about the drug trafficker and the former beauty queen dates back to the beginning of their relationship when El Chapo decided to marry Emma Coronel after she prepared some Swiss enchiladas for him. They are the former Sinaloa Cartel leader’s favorite dish.

According to the book Emma y las otras señoras del narco (Emma and the Other Ladies of Narco), written by journalist Anabel Hernández, what ended up making Joaquín Guzmán fall in love with the then beauty queen was the fact that she prepared this dish in the same way his mother did.

This story was also confirmed by the New York Times in an article published in 2019, where a text exchange between El Chapo and Emma Colonel was revealed during the criminal proceeding against the drug lord.

According to this information, the couple talked about their twin daughters, the drug dealer’s friends and the day he fell in love with his current wife after trying her Swiss enchiladas. So the rumors appear to be true!

However, Emma Coronel was not the only woman who made the drug lord fall in love with this typical Mexican dish. In 1993, when the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel was confined in the Puente Grande maximum security prison, the prison cook stole his heart with her Swiss enchiladas, according to Prensa Libre.

Joaquín Guzmán met Yves Eréndira Moreno, a cook in one of the modules of this maximum security prison located in Jalisco, who frequently cooked Swiss enchiladas to keep the drug trafficker happy. “Guzmán Loera established a more or less human relationship with her, he wrote letters to her and sent flowers to her house. He said he fell in love because she cooked enchiladas just like his mother’s,» said Anabel Hernández.

According to El financiero, when Mexican drug trafficker Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán was being held in a New York prison, Consuelo Loera, his mother, said that she wanted to visit him to bring him his favorite food: Swiss enchiladas.

This happened in June 2019, at the time El Independiente reported on the US visa that Consuelo Loera and her two daughters had received to visit Joaquín Guzmán. In this investigation, Anabel Hernández concludes that he was incredibly attached to this Mexican dish that his mother prepared for him. «With a very strong maternal attachment, without a doubt his most important emotional bond, El Chapo looked for his mother in all the women he knew,» said the investigative journalist.
