According to the arrest warrant against Elías Espinoza Ramos, consulted by Mundo Hispánico, on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at 3:00 in the afternoon, the WPD emergency number received a call alerting them to a shooting in a house where a family was gathered.

When officers arrived at the home 3501 Alta Vista, they discovered that two-year-old Zillyana Nalaia Thornton’s own family had taken her to a hospital after she was shot. Officers stayed on the scene and others were sent to the hospital.

How did Zillyana Nalaia Thornton die?

Other WPD officers were sent to the hospital, where emergency room doctors confirmed to officers that the little girl was pronounced dead shortly after arriving for treatment. Detectives from the department’s Homicide Division then took up the case.

In the house where several adults and children were gathered, the detectives found Elías Espinoza Ramos and detained him. The case documents do not detail the detainee’s age or his relationship to the little girl. However, he is the owner of the gun that killed Zillyana Nalaia Thornton.

The investigation is ongoing

Cierra Shhipley, a spokeswoman for the WCP, revealed that Elías Espinoza Ramos is currently only accused of tampering with criminal evidence in the commission of a crime. The investigation is still open to find out the details of how the Zillyana Nalaia Thornton was shot.

“At the moment it is a very confusing situation… our detectives are working to determine how exactly the shooting occurred. We have not been able to confirm more details of the incident,” said spokeswoman Cierra Shhipley about Elías Espinoza Ramos.

«The love of our life left too soon»

Michaela Rodríguez started the GoFundMe campaign: Zillyana Nalaïa Thornton’s Funeral Expenses (Funeral Expenses for Zillyana Nalaia), to ask for help and financial support from the community after the little girl’s killing. Some clues about what may have happened can be found in Rodríguez’s plea.

“Due to a tragic accident the love of our life left too soon. We ask that you support our family in providing a proper burial for our precious baby girl. We as a family want to give her… the burial she deserves, honor her memory and say goodbye for the last time, ”says Michaela Rodríguez.
