The driver of the trailer where 53 immigrants suffocated to death in San Antonio, Texas, was under the influence of drugs according to local media reports. An unidentified police official told the ‘whole truth’.

According to Agencia Reforma, the officer told the San Antonio Express News that the driver, identified as Homero Zamorano, 45, «was heavily drugged on methamphetamine when he was arrested.» And that «he had to be taken to the hospital.»

Zamorano reportedly has addresses in Houston and the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. The Commissioner of the National Migration Institute, Francisco Garduño, reported this morning in a press conference that cameras captured the truck driver when he passed through a Border Patrol checkpoint in Encinal, Texas.

He also detailed during President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s press conference that the trailer had cloned license plates from the Betancourt Trucking and Harvesting company, registered in Álamo, Texas. There are more suspects in the death of dozens of immigrants

In addition to Zamorano who, according to the Mexican authorities pretended to be a victim, two other people linked to the trafficking and death of migrants were arrested. According to the San Antonio Express News, after the US authorities arrested Zamorano, they searched the area.

Authorities found a house in Bexar County, that was linked to the traffickers, where they arrested the other two men for possession of firearms while in the United States illegally. According to the media, Zamorano could appear in court Wednesday.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner, where the survivors are being treated, updated the death toll on Wednesday and added that 37 of the 53 have potentially been identified. There are 40 men and 13 women among the victims. The deceased are from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
