  • Direct payments will soon be sent to thousands of Americans.
  • Part of the payment is energy relief for residents of a US state.
  • The average resident will receive a check for $3,200.

Good news for thousands of people in the US! New direct payments of up to $3,200 will be sent within weeks to thousands of eligible Americans.

The state of Alaska plans to begin distributing this year’s Permanent Fund payment, as well as a special energy relief payment, to residents on September 20, 2022.

The timeline was announced last Friday by Governor Mike Dunleavy and the state Department of Revenue. The combined dividend and energy relief payment is estimated to be about $3,200 per person. A final figure is pending.

Residents will receive the money in a single payment, the department said. Lawmakers intended the energy relief to be a one-time benefit to help residents with high energy costs.

According to The Sun, state officials say Alaska residents will receive types of relief. The Alaska Permanent Fund, which gives state residents a share of dividends from the oil wealth, will total $2,550 this year.

In addition to the Alaska Permanent Fund, Alaskans will also receive a second payment of $650 for energy relief. «The combined payment will come in a single check, and the governor said that electronic distribution will begin on September 20,» said The Sun.

Most Alaskans get an annual dividend. There is an annual application and residency requirement to qualify. Traditionally, dividends have been paid using proceeds from the state’s oil wealth fund, the Alaska Permanent Fund. They are usually paid in early fall.

But Dunleavy said this year’s distribution will be a little earlier. Checks will start going out to those who requested direct deposit payments beginning September 20 and those who submitted a paper application or requested a paper check beginning the week of October 3, according to the Department of Revenue.

The department said it was still in the process of determining the eligibility of more than 78,000 applicants. Checks for last year’s dividend began going out the week of October 11, 2021. Last year’s dividend was $1,114, The Associated Press reported.

«Alaskans have waited seven long years to receive a fair and sizable dividend, and it couldn’t have come at a more important time,» Governor Dunleavy said. “Alaskans, especially in rural communities, will have to pay extraordinarily high fuel and heating oil bills this winter, and rampant inflation is forcing all Alaskan families to pay more for basic needs like food and medicines,” continued the governor.
