  • Several people killed in tanker truck accident.
  • Police are still investigating the cause.

A tanker belonging to Pertamina, the Indonesian state oil and gas company, crashed into a line of motorcycles and other vehicles in the middle of an intersection on Monday, causing multiple injuries and deaths.

The terrifying reports indicate some of the victims ended up under the tanker truck. According to CNN Indonesia, the fatal accident left at least 11 dead and several injured. A video showed the horror of the accident with the Pertamina tanker.

The driver in the brutal accident suffered minor injuries, according to CNN Indonesia. “He is healthy. We just processed the crime scene. They will give us 24 hours later to determine if he is a suspect or not,» said Aan Suhanan, a brigade chief.

The oil truck apparently struck the cars and motorcycles because its brakes failed, The Associated Press reported. The tanker, operated by the state oil company Pertamina, spun out of control and collided with two cars and 10 motorcycles that were stopped at a traffic light in Cibubur in east Jakarta, said Latif Usman, director of land traffic for the Jakarta police.

He added that the investigation is ongoing but that the preliminary hypothesis is that the brakes failed just as the truck was going downhill near the traffic light, where it hit several vehicles. At least 11 people died at the scene and six others are hospitalized, some in critical condition, Usman said. No explosion was recorded in the incident.

Police questioned the truck driver, who suffered minor injuries. Pertamina stated that it was helping the victims and cooperating with the investigation of the incident. «We express our apologies and deep condolences to the victims and their families,» said Eko Kristiawan, manager of Pertamina in West Java, according to AP.
