Officers from the BRPD Homicide Division took David Méndez to the department’s headquarters to find out what exactly happened in the motel room. Through a bilingual officer, detectives got the details of a very strange homicide.

David Méndez told BRPD Homicide Division officers that during the confrontation with Juan Reyes Lugo he had received a “spiritual message” from Santa Muerte ordering him to kill the other man. He obeyed the unofficial saint and shot his roommate.

Based on David Méndez’s strangely calm confession, officers from the BRPD Homicide Division charged the man with second-degree murder and illegal possession and use of a firearm in the murder of Juan Reyes Lugo.

David Méndez told BRPD agents that he was originally from San Bernardino, California, and offered an address in that city as his permanent residence. However, due to his limited English, the officers believe the man is an immigrant and are trying to determine where he is from.

The Hemispheric Institute is a non-profit organization that brings together academics from different disciplines to do research on Hispanic immigration in the United States. That institute published a paper about Santa Muerte: Saint of the Dispossessed, Enemy of Church and State by Lois Ann Lorentzen.

Santa Muerte «is associated with those living precarious lives and/or engaged in dangerous undertakings,» says researcher Lorentzen of the University of San Francisco. She explains that the Vatican prohibits its followers from worshiping the unofficial saint.
