CBP One Mobile app adds an option for I-94 in Spanish

• CBP added a Spanish version of the I-94 form to the CBP One™ mobile app.
• The form is required at ports of entry for foreigners who are not US residents.
• The app was released in 2020, however it was only available in English.

The Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) launched the Spanish version of the CBP One™ mobile app, which allows users to process the I-94 form, required at the ports of entry to foreigners who are not residents of US.

In October 2020, the immigration authorities launched the mobile application to allow foreigners to process the I-94 form up to seven days before their arrival in the US, but it was only available in English, the EFE news agency reported.

CBP releases form I-94 in Spanish

With this new version in Spanish, CBP intends to further expedite the entry of foreigners into the country and improve the experience of visitors at ports of entry, CBP said in a statement. The CBP One™ app also allows the visitor to review their travel history, check the expiration date of their I-94, and obtain electronic proof of the document from their mobile device.

CBP explained that foreign visitors can also use form I-94 to adjust their immigration status or extend their stay. Those who need to prove their legal visitor status to employers, universities or government agencies can access their check-in or check-out information from the app.

How much does form I-94 cost?

CBP One™ is free to download but the cost of the I-94 form is $6, the same cost that applies when a visitor files the form upon arrival at a port of entry.

The good news for immigrants seems to keep coming, since apart from the incorporation of the I-94 form in Spanish, the driver’s license law for undocumented immigrants in Massachusetts was also symbolically signed. Activists, representatives and senators from Massachusetts carried out a symbolic signing of the Labor and Family Mobility Law on Monday, June 13, which will allow undocumented immigrants from that state to apply for driver’s licenses.

Good news for the undocumented

The law, with which it is estimated will benefit 250,000 immigrants, will take effect on July 1, 2023. Democrats in the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives managed to pass the law last week, after overriding the veto of the Republican Governor Charlie Baker, who opposed signing the measure previously approved by two-thirds of both houses.

With this law, promoted 20 years ago by some 270 organizations that in 2019 joined in a coalition led by the 32BJ union of Service Employees and the Brazilian Workers Center, Massachusetts joins 16 other states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico, which already have legislation for the same purpose. Once the law goes into effect, immigrants without legal status will be able to apply for driver’s licenses by presenting two documents that prove their identity, reported EFE.
