  • Bus accident in Kenya leaves at least 30 dead.
  • Some people are still hospitalized.
  • Officials presume it was caused by brake failure.

A bus fell from a bridge into a river in Kenya, killing at least 3o people, according to police. The incident has been reported by various media including Daily Mail and the AP news agency.

The bus, which was traveling from the central city of Meru to the capital Nairobi, «must have developed brake failure, because it was at a very high speed when the accident happened,» police officer Rono Bunei said. The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday and Red Cross officials said the rescue operation was called off as night fell.

Alex Mugambi, leader of a community rescue team, said at the time of the mishap that he believed it was likely that the death toll would increase over the hours. Sadly, this did happen after a preliminary report indicated that there were 21 dead and right now there are at least 30, while other sources indicate that there are 34.

Roads are often narrow in Kenya, and police blame accidents on speeding drivers. At least 20 passengers were killed on July 8 in an accident on the road from Nairobi to the coastal city of Mombasa.

ANOTHER DEADLY BUS ACCIDENT

An accident involving an interprovincial public transport bus left nine dead and 20 injured on Monday, after the vehicle fell off the side of the road in a rural area east of Quito, firefighters reported.

Major Henry Silva, from the Quito Fire Department, who was coordinating the rescue tasks at the scene, told the Teleamazonas network that the bus from the Putumayo cooperative, with 34 people on board, was traveling between the city of Lago Agrio, in the Amazon, and the capital. It ran off the road in an area called Paluguillo, 37 kilometers east of Quito. Filed As: Kenyan Bus Dead
