  • Authorities had been trying to locate Eliza Fletcher.
  • She was found dead after disappearing days ago.
  • It’s believed she was kidnapped.

The kidnapping and murder of the granddaughter of an important Tennessee tycoon has shocked the United States. Police confirmed that the human remains found in the area where she disappeared belonged to Eliza Fletcher. They had been trying to locate her for three days, however, it did not turn out as hoped.

The victim was a 34-year-old kindergarten teacher who disappeared Friday after being violently abducted near the University of Memphis. All clues led to a man who was recently released from prison for a similar crime.

After Eliza Fletcher’s disappearance, Cleotha Abston, 38, was charged with «aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence» the Memphis Police Department said. His brother Mario Abston, 36, was also arrested.

The woman was forced into a vehicle while jogging near the University of Memphis campus. A man approached her and forced her into a dark colored GMC Terrain SUV after a brief struggle. Her husband reported her disappearance as the hours passed and she did not return home, according to the authorities.

Eliza Fletcher was the granddaughter and heiress of the late Joseph «Joe» Orgill III, a billionaire who ran Orgill Inc., a Memphis-based hardware distributor, according to The New York Times and NBC News. The family offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to her safe return.

“Memphis Police investigators and officers, along with our local and federal partners, continue to search for Ms. Fletcher,” the police department said Saturday. They still had hopes of finding the woman alive.

According to CNN, Memphis police said on Twitter that investigators identified the body of Eliza Fletcher, 34, a school teacher and granddaughter of a deceased businessman. Her body was found on Monday after the search over the weekend that she was kidnapped.

Later that day, authorities focused on the intersection of Victor Street and East Person Avenue until they found the remains, whose identity was confirmed today. The search by federal agents and police in Memphis spanned multiple locations and continued Sunday at Mario Abston’s apartment.

Abston, 38, was arrested Saturday after surveillance footage and DNA material linked him to the crime. Initially, the suspect was charged with aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence. It was not said in what condition Eliza’s body was found.

First, they analyzed a pair of sandals that were found at the kidnapping scene, near the victim’s phone. DNA found on the shoes matched Abston’s, the affidavit says. A witness said he saw Abston at his brother’s house after the kidnapping.
