BIDEN SIGNS IMPORTANT GUN SAFETY BILL. On Saturday, Joe Biden signed an important gun safety bill. This is one of the most important of the Democratic president’s initiatives and it is hoped that it will make a difference in the face of the numerous, terrifying shootings across the country.

The House of Representatives approved the legislation on Frida and, on Saturday, the president was finally able to sign this valuable initiative. It is hoped that by passing this bill there will be greater security in schools and for families that have suffered due to gun violence.

President Joe Biden signed the most comprehensive gun safety bill in decades on Saturday. It is a bipartisan compromise that seemed unimaginable until a recent spate of deadly shootings, including the massacre of 19 students and two teachers in a Texas elementary school, The Associated Press reported.

This new bill was written in response to the recent incidents of gun violence that have left a terrible mark on the communities, not only where the tragedies occurred, but for everyone across the country. The bill is expected to take effect in the coming weeks.

The House of Representatives gave its final approval on Friday, following the Senate’s endorsement on Thursday. Biden signed the initiative into law just before leaving Washington to attend two summits in Europe, The Associated Press reported. When talking about the incidents that occurred, the president stated that the bill «will save lives.»

The legislation will toughen background checks for younger gun buyers, keep firearms out of the hands of domestic violence offenders, and help states implement laws that make it easier for authorities to take guns from people deemed dangerous, according to the AP. The White House revealed more about the bill.

Most of its $13 billion cost will help bolster mental health programs and help fortify schools, which have been the target of major shootings in Newtown, Connecticut; Parkland, Fla.; and other places, The Associated Press reported. The White House, through an official statement, stated that this project will put certain restrictions and sanctions on the purchase of firearms and is expected to promote evidence-based practices for school safety. In addition, with the budget it is expected that there will be better access to mental health services.

The “Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which enhances certain restrictions and penalties on firearms purchases; promotes evidence-based best practices for school safety; authorizes grants to expand access to mental health services; and appropriates emergency funding for mental health resources and school safety measures,» the White House said.

Biden said the compromise crafted by a bipartisan group of senators «doesn’t have everything I want» but «does include actions that I have long called for and that are going to save lives.» The president said that on July 11 they will organize an event for legislators and families affected by the gun violence, according to The Associated Press.

“I know there is much more work to do and I will never give up, but this is a monumental day,” said the president, who was accompanied at the signing by his wife, Jill, a former teacher. Biden signed the initiative two days after the Supreme Court ruling on Thursday that struck down a New York law that restricted people’s ability to carry concealed weapons.
