  • A state program has helped thousands of families who could not pay their rent.
  • More than a billion dollars in rental assistance were distributed.
  • More than 174,000 families in Texas benefited from the assistance program.

The Texas Rent Relief program has distributed more than $ 1 billion in rental and utility assistance to more than 174,000 Texas homes, announced the state’s Governor, Greg Abbott.

This makes Texas, according to the governor’s office, the first state to distribute $ 1 billion in rental assistance funds to households that have experienced severe financial stress as a result of the covid-19 pandemic, and it has another 900 million more.

And they are on the way, as Abbot and the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) indicated that there are already another 52 million already committed to be paid. This aid, they assured, has already reached homes in 241 of the 254 counties in the state, that is, 95% of them.

«The Texas Rent Relief Program continues to provide valuable assistance to Texans who need help with rent and utilities,» said the Governor. Bobby Wilkinson, executive director of TDHCA, acknowledged that the «great and urgent need» arising from the pandemic is still «present» in the state.

Requirements to qualify

To qualify for these benefits, households must be at 80% or less of the area median income, as well as meet other criteria. More than 82% of the households served are extremely low or low income and are below 50% of the area median income.

The program prioritizes people at risk of eviction, and more than 15,000 applicants have seen the evictions hanging over them halted and removed from their credit records and have received more than $ 126 million in assistance. In the worst of the pandemic, in the spring of 2020, Texas gross domestic product plummeted 9.1% from the previous quarter.

Unemployment rose in February 2020 from 3.5% to 12.9% in April of that year, and since then it has been recovering until reaching 5.9% last August. The authorities also encouraged homeowners to submit an application on behalf of the tenants of their properties, who must jointly sign the application.

State residents can apply for the program by calling 1-833-9TX-RENT (1-833-989-7368) or submitting online at TexasRentRelief.com.
