2 confirmed dead and 5 injured in shooting at Los Angeles park

Two people were killed and at least five were injured in a shooting that took place Sunday at a Los Angeles park where a car show was taking place, reported The Associated Press.

The city Police Department said the shooting occurred around 3:50 p.m. in Peck Park in the San Pedro neighborhood. The agency tweeted that there was no active shooter situation, without giving further details.

Death toll confirmed after Peck Park shooting

Up to seven people suffered gunshot wounds in this incident and, among them, a woman and a man died on the way to the hospital, according to Brian Humphrey, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, reported local media.

The injured are between the ages of 3 and 54 and 4 of them are in critical condition, reported the fire department and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), according to EFE.

Who are the victims?

Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Kelly Muniz said in a press conference that the victims were near the baseball field. Police have not identified the victims.

“The original report was of multiple victims at a shooting at the Peck Park baseball field. It is currently an active crime scene and we are continuing to search for additional evidence and possible victims in the park,” Muniz said. «Right now we don’t know exactly how many attackers we have.»

The car show was not authorized

The incident occurred while some 500 people enjoyed Sunday at an outdoor car show that did not have a permit. Police have not released a motive and no arrests have been made.

Firefighters said the incident occurred at, or near, the show and that at least three people suffered gunshot wounds, two of whom were in critical condition. Seven people in total, four men and three women, were injured and taken to hospitals, according to fire officials.

Police collected evidence at the scene

Peck Park is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of downtown Los Angeles. The magnitude of the shooting sparked a large police presence in the area. Later, the captain and LAPD spokesperson, Kelly Muniz, gave a press conference in which she stated that she is still looking for the shooters and a white Mercedes-Benz vehicle that could be related to the case.

Officers found multiple firearms at the crime scene. Likewise, she stated that «the total number of armed individuals involved» in this «dispute between two parties» is still unknown, without giving more details about the motive behind this incident.
